The RCC Pilotage Foundation was established in 1976 through the generosity of Dr Fred Ellis, an American member of the Royal Cruising Club. Unlike islands in the trade wind belts, the Azores can be reached from almost any direction. Yachts arrive from Britain and Northwest Europe, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, Madeira, the South Atlantic, the Caribbean, Bermuda, the US East Coast and Canada. Departure is slightly more limited, with few yachts leaving the islands to head westwards though it is by no means unknown.
