The Author

Xavier Pastor is one of Spain's leading maritime historians. He has spent many years gathering material on the coastal working craft of Spain, and is a fine modelmaker and draughtsman. He has produced numerous plans of Spanish small craft, and is a regular contributor to Model Shipwright and other nautical journals. Widely recognised as an authority on the fifteenth-century Mataro nao, he was closely involved with the Spanish reconstruction of the ships of Columbus for the 500th anniversary of the European discovery of America.

The guide to the colour scheme of the Santa Maria shown on the front of the jacket is painted by Ross Watton. Also shown are the flag of the Kingdom of Castille and Leon and the standard presented to the expedition by the monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. On the back of the jacket the hulls of the NiƱa and Pinta are shown, with the pennant flown from the mizzen mast of the Santa Maria.
