The Papua New Guinea mail service is top class. Although I personally had a couple of bad experiences, in the main the staff (now fully localised) is efficient and the service world class.
Surface mail is not a recommended method of mail delivery for the visitor because of the time it can take. For example, a parcel from Sydney to Rabaul should only take one month. In fact it can take up to four months. Air mail, on the other hand, is very swift and is slightly cheaper than Australian rates.
Mail transfers from town to town are free and very reliable, especially if the local postal restante has time to get to know you.
The post office opens Monday to Friday, 0900 hours to 1500 hours with a lunch break between 1200 hours and 1300 hours. On Saturdays it opens 0900 hours to 1100 hours.
