Meanwhile, the Indonesians are casting covetous eyes towards Papua New Guinea — indeed, they refer to it as 'East Irian' and continuing border conflicts may yet develop into something far more ugly. I hope not. I have nothing against the Indonesians, but nevertheless hope that Papua New Guinea will be allowed to develop peacefully and cease to become a pawn on that giant chess board.
For those who wish to gain a full understanding of the history of Papua New Guinea, the following list of books is strongly recommended. All are available from bookshops in the major town or can be purchased overseas.
Moment of Truth — Ian Todd — Angus & Robertson, Sydney 1974
New Guinea — The Last Unknown Gavin Souter — Angus & Robertson, Sydney 1963.
Mountains in the Clouds — Olaf Ruhen — Rigby, Adelaide 1963.
Rust in Peace — Bruce Adams — Antipodean, Sydney 1975.
