MULLlNS HARBOUR lies 55 miles west of Samarai and provides perfectly calm anchorage in any weather. Having not been there for many years the information here is provided by Guy Wilson who manages a plantation near Samarai and who, with his wife, cruised this coast in 1977.
The large bay which forms the harbour proper can be entered if required, but it is shoal and often dirty and the effort is not really necessary except perhaps to shelter from extreme north westerlies. The best anchorage is shown on the map and lies to the west of Wabitu Point directly off Konemaioua Village. Some current will be experienced here but seldom is it annoying.
The beaches are dark coloured sand and the bottom is good holding mud. The approach is clear of hazards with normal regard to common sense and is best made through the San Rochce Passage between the mainland and Bona Bona Island.
MARSHALL LAGOON (McFarlane Harbour — Kupiano)
Variously known by any of the three names indicated, Marshall Lagoon itself is a large lagoon set into the mainland, entered through a channel which is known as McFarlane Harbour and on whose shores is the government station and timber milling town of Kupiano.
The lagoon is unique for the two villages which lie inside are completely landless, being built on stilts above the lake. The villages close to the entrance of the lagoon are singularly unattractive being largely built of European material.
McFarlane Harbour is entered from the sea under the lee of the offshore barrier reefs which reduce the swell to a relatively small wave which does not make the entrance dangerous unless the navigation beacons are not identified properly.
