It is interesting to note what happens when a builder calls in an outside racing design team (in this case the designers Graham & Schlageter) to tweak the performance of an existing boat (the S2 6.7) drawn by an inside designer (in this case Don Wennersten). That's what happened when S2 apparently decided that the 6.7 wasn't fast enough on the race course, and redesigned her, naming her the S2 6.9. You can see what difference it made in the comparison of comp stats below: virtually no difference at all. See the S2 6.9 (next page) for more. In all, S2 produced 160

hulls in four years before moving on to the S2 6.9. Best features: Like the Newport 214, the S2 6.7 and 6.9 hulls have practically nothing below the waterline with the lifting keel in the up position, making launching and retrieving on a trailer a comparatively easy job. The PHRF seems a bit high (or is the Beneteau First 210 too low?) for boats of this type. It makes us wonder if calling in G&S was necessary. Worst features: As with the S2 6.9, the heavy lifting keel and its attendant winch is bound to cause problems sooner or later, just by the nature of the beast.
