Olympic medal-winner Peter Barrett designed this little boat. We found it hard to keep from calling her a "tub" until we realized that she looks better in real life than in the crude drawings that were used to market her, from which the diagrams you see here were taken. She began in 1969 as an Aquarius 21, then (with very minor changes) became the Aquarius Pelican about 1978, and still later was called the Balboa 21. Best features: A pop top gives 5' 9" headroom, which together with a galley area (sizable for this size boat; not shown on the plan of this early version), good storage space, and a folding table, make this boat quite a livable weekender. Ballast is highest of the comps and beam next highest, helping to improve her stability versus her comps. (However, her centerboard weighs only 165 pounds, and the rest of her 665 pounds of ballast is all contained near or at the waterline, and that reduces her stability compared to her comps.) Minimum draft of one foot with no centerboard projection makes launching from a trailer relatively easy. Worst features: She is billed as a four-sleeper, but we wouldn't try sleeping more than two.
