How Tides Work

tides are the vertical rise and fall of the sea caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and, to a lesser extent, the sun. At full moon and new moon, when the sun, moon, and Earth are aligned, the gravitational pull is largest. this results in spring tides, which have the largest range between high and low water. When the three bodies are opposed (at right angles), neap tides result, with the smallest range between high and low water.

Most tidal areas have twice-daily tides created by the Earth's rotation. the time between high water and low water is approximately six hours, with two high waters and two low waters every day. in the tropics, there is one high and one low water each day with a small tidal range.
