You cannot have too many flares. They are, however, expensive to buy and since you hope never to use them, it comes hard to spend more than you must. The answer for the thinking boatowner is therefore to ship a complete outfit of up to date flares and smoke signals, but to keep your older ones aboard as well. Unless they came from HMS Victory, there is a good chance that they will work. They could save your life.

Red rocket (parachute) flares are used to indicate that there is a vessel in distress. They may not show exactly where you are, but they will attract attention if they are seen. Should your parachute flares be in short supply, do not blaze away willy-nilly. If you can, wait until you see a ship's lights on the horizon, unless you are near an inhabited coast.

Rocket flares should be launched pointing skywards, but slightly downwind. They will then recurve to windward and burst overhead. If a flare fails to fire, don't peer into the top to find out what is wrong. It may just be a slow starter.

Red rocket flares should ideally be used in pairs, because if somebody sees one out of the corner of his eye, he will turn and look at it, musing, 'That looked like a red flare. I wonder if it really was . . .' When he sees the second one which you send up half a minute after the first has died, he knows what's what and reacts. If you only have four rockets, save the second pair as long as you can.

Red pinpoint (hand-held) flares arc used to indicate your exact position. If you can see the side lights of a small vessel, she will certainly be able to make out your flare, because although you may be lower and partially obscured by waves, it is a hundred times brighter than her steaming lights. Always hold a pinpoint flare to leeward.

Smoke canisters are used to indicate your position in daylight. Launch or hold them to leeward.

White rocket flares can be of inestimable value when searching for a man overboard, or in any other emergency which requires a general lighting-up of the scene. Hand-held whites arc your final defence against being run down. When all else fails and you can't get out of the way, ignite a white flare. The ship's lookout, if there is such a person on the bridge, will sec that for certain.
