The lift

Under ideal conditions it is possible that a helicopter crewman will be winched straight down to you. He will bring with him either a lifting strop or a stretcher, and will take off either a casualty or all hands one at a time, whichever is required.

It is important when you are being lifted that you only help when asked to do so. Once you are in the strop, keep your arms by your side. When you are up alongside the helicopter, do nothing until instructed. If a stretcher is being employed, you'll probably have to help the winchman to place your casualty in it. It is the winchman's responsibility to oversee the transfer, so you must obey his instructions.
