Wairokai north west channel Harbours i

Harbour the visitor has the option of striking south or north into Are Are Lagoon. Here we presume you will strike north and therefore describe the North West Channel. The North West Channel is one of the most fascinating still water passages one can make in the Solomons. On leaving Wairokai Harbour, beacons lead a vessel between obvious fringing reef and rocks and into the spectacular scenery of the channel. Just when one becomes convinced there is no way out except by the way you came, a gap...

A visa is granted on entering the country for two months. This may be extended on the grounds of wanting to see more of the country and thus needing more time as long as the application is lodged well before the extension is required. Employment is not obtainable in the country and those gaining employment outside the country will need work permits (this is usually organised by the employing company). Those visitors who do gain employment whilst in the country are obliged to apply for a work...

World War Ii In The Solomons

The following is but a basic outline of how World War 11 effected the Solomons. It is aimed at showing just why so much blood was spilt by both sides in this part of the South Pacific and not at filling the reader with incidentals. Before going on, those readers who want to dig deeper are recommended Walter Lord's book, Lonely Vigil. This tells the complete story of the Coast Watchers of the Solomons and thus tells the story of the war here. Further information can be gleaned from booklets...

Guadalcanal Island Very rarely does

One hear the word island tacked to the end of Guadalcanal. For some obscure reason everyone simply says 'Guadalcanal. Certainly, the single word Guadalcanal is one of the most famous to come out of World War 11. The campaign fought here was one of the most important because it was on Guadalcanal where the Japanese were either stopped or permitted to fan out and spread to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and so on. The fact that we are still speaking English indicates that the Japanese were stopped...

San Cristobal Solomon Islands

This passage of around 200 nautical miles is on magnetic course 257. This puts the south east trade wind over the port quarter which promises a fast and relatively comfortable broad reach. Occasionally the wind will be found to favour the east in which case a slower passage will be made. However, during early and late winter, the wind sometimes swings from east south east to east north east giving the sailor a chance to tack downwind without actually changing course. There should be a north...
