Marine Centre, a full-service marina and boatyard offering a 50-ton lift capable of lifting boats of up to 70 feet.

The marina has 180 slips available and visiting yachtsmen are advised to contact the harbourmaster on VHF channel 16 or 68 for docking instructions. The controlling draft is 9 feet.

Navigation

Head for the southernmost point of Nanny Cay (the Peg Leg Landing restaurant is an easy landmark), until the red and green channel markers are visible. The larger reef is to port and marked by a green buoy. Head between the green and red buoys, leaving the red to starboard. The number of buoys may vary, but the marina does keep the channel marked.

The inner harbour has shoal water on the western shore and is marked with a series of green buoys-do not go west of these buoys. There is no anchoring, due to the lack of room. Visiting yachts should tie up to docks A & B (the first docks to starboard upon entering) and check with the harbourmaster.

Ashore

Amenities available within the marina complex, include showers, water, gift shop, laundromat, ice and fuel. Provisions may be purchased from the Gourmet Chandler and storage lockers may be rented through the marina. Blue Water Divers operates a dive shop and conducts diving tours daily.

Please note: Customs and immigration services are no longer available at Nanny Cay Marine Centre. You must clear through one of the other ports of entry.

Two restaurants complement the marina. The Plaza Cafe is open all day. Peg Leg Landing, a rather whimsical restaurant on the point, serves lunch and dinner and overlooks the Sir Francis Drake Channel. It's a great place to eat, with a view from even table.

Nanny Cay, a headquarters for man\ crewed and bareboat charterers, offers dis counted rates for yachtsmen at the hotel and use of the pool and tennis court. Windsurfing lessons are also available here.

Sun Yacht Charters' new base at Hannah Bay Marina lies to the west of Nanny Cay Facilities include deep water slips 9 1/2 foot draft, condominiums (conspicuous pink structures with teal green roofs) for short or long term accommodation, swimming pool showers, water, ice, electricity, telephone and cable TV hook-ups. Transient yacht are welcome at the facility for short term dockage and use of facilities. Sun Yachi Charters monitors VHF channel 12. Thei -are plans for a provisioning store and laundry facility at a future date.

PROSPECT REEF HARBOUR

PROSPECT REEF RESORT

Just to the west of Road Town is a small harbour that services the Prospect Reef Hotel. It can accommodate vessels up to 40 feet in length and 5-1/2 feet of draft.

Navigation

The harbour entrance has reef on either side. Be sure you know exactly where you are and what to expect, because once in the channel you are committed.

A stone breakwater extends from the shoreline marking the starboard side of the channel. When entering, be prepared to make a "dogleg" to port once you are through the breakwater.

No anchoring is allowed, so tie up alongside the bulkhead and check with the harbourmaster.

Ashore

Prospect Reef offers all the conveniences of a major hotel complex, including an Olympic-size swimming pool, a diving pool and a sea pool, two restaurants, tennis courts, a 9-hole golf course, and provisions at Little Circle. Geared to the needs of tourists and yachtsmen, Little Circle offers an extensive selection of foods and wines.

For those who wish to browse and buy, don't miss On The Beach and the Pink Pineapple, two wonderful shops. This is also the home of Rainbow Visions, which provides a terrific, personalized video service for divers and yachtsmen.

Baskin in the Sun maintains their dive shop operation in the Prospect Reef complex, as well.

Road Harbour

Road Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands, is the centre of commerce, shipping and social activity. Over the past few years, tremendous development has taken place to enable it to better cope with the steady influx of cruising and charter boats. Now Road Town can boast some of the most sophisticated nautical facilities in the Caribbean chain.

Navigation

Approaching Road Harbour from the west, your first landmarks will be the silver fuel tanks located by Fish Bay on the eastern side of the harbour. The other is the dome-shaped gold roof of the Fort Burt Hotel, located high up on Burt Point, the western side of the harbour entrance.

Locate the green sea buoy (FL Green 3 Sec.) marking the end of the reef, extending east from Burt Point and leave it to port. There is a red conical buoy (FL Red 9 Sec.) marking Scotch Bank on the eastern side of the harbour.

Fort Burt Marina

Once inside the buoys, it is advisable to head for the customs dock (approximately 292 degrees M), until the Fort Burt Jetty is abeam. This will bring you clear of the reef that extends to the north of the mangroves. Anchor to the northeast of the docks about 300 feet out. Check the sketch chart for location of sandbars and anchorage.

Hundreds of sailors have found themselves aground on the sandbar that extends north of the mangroves because they rounded up too quickly. The situation is particularly embarrassing because of the proximity of the local Paradise Pub which overlooks the anchorage.

If you wish to inquire as to services or docking, pull alongside and check with the dockmaster. Fort Burt Marina has recently been updated and refurbished with new docks and slips. They do accept transient boats and offer gas, diesel, water and ice as well as telephone and TV cable hook up and of course, electricity. Call on VHF 12.

For supplies, in addition to The Pub, Island Marine Supply has a well-managed marine chandlery, and Riteway Supermarket operates a grocery in adjacent quarters from which you can resupply.

Road Reef Marina

A line of small green buoys marks the channel to Road Reef Marina, home of Tortola Marine Management, a bareboat charter company. As you enter the channel, keep the green buoys to your port, Fort Burt Marina and Smith's Ferry dock to your right. On the upper right hand corner of the roof of the Pub you will see a day glow orange range marker, this combines with the orange day glow mark on the piling to give you a range to come in to the marina.

There are a couple of shallow patches close to the roadside beneath Fort Burt Hotel, so favour the port side of the channel as you enter the pool of Road Reef Marina. TMM manages the complete marina; most services except fuel are available. Road Reef Marina monitors channel 12, should you require their assistance. In the same complex that houses the marina office is The Marine Division of the Royal Police, the new BVI Yacht Club, the office of VISAR and Island Care Electronics.

The Customs Dock

Being the main port of entry to the British Virgin Islands, all vessels arriving from the U.S. Virgin Islands or other foreign ports must clear with customs and immigration before proceeding to a marina.

Anchor off the town dock, as it is not advisable to lie alongside; apart from the commercial traffic, the surge is often excessive. In I anding the dinghy, use a dinghy anchor to keep the stern off,

Wickham's Cay (Moorings/Treasure Isle/ Village Cay/Inner Harbour)

To the north of the government dock is the Wickhams Cay I and II Yacht Harbour and Marine Service complex. Approaching from seaward, you will see the new government administration building and cruise ship dock. There is a quick flashing 3 seconds light marking the dolphin off the cruise ship dock and numerous masts behind a stone breakwater. Head for the masts until you see the outer set of buoys marking the channel entrance. Leaving red to starboard, proceed through the breakwater entrance (80' wide x 10' deep) picking up the second set of markers inside.

The Moorings/Mariner Inn

One of the Caribbean's most comprehensive facilities, the Moorings/Mariner Inn has been developed around the Moorings' charter fleet of 160 yachts. The complex consists of 38 lanai rooms overlooking the harbour, a fresh-water swimming pool, restaurant, gift shop, provisioning store (K-Mark's Gourmet Galley) and service facilities. Underwater Safaris operates its dive shop and tour business at the head of the dock (see dive section).

For docking information it is best to contact the dockmaster via VHP 12.

Upon entering the harbour, there will be three docks. The first, "A" dock, is the one used for visiting yachts and offers finger pier docking for 90 boats. Water is available, as is shore power of both 110 and 220 volts.

Any vessel needing diesel fuel should contact the dockmaster. "B" and "C" docks are reserved for the Moorings/Mariner bareboat and crewed charter fleet.

A short walk will bring you to K-Mark's Gourmet Galley provisioning store. With cruising yachtsmen in mind, the Gourmet Galley has not only practical necessities, but also a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and fresh-baked items.

Treasure Isle Dock/ Hotel

In the centre as you approach from the breakwater is the Treasure Isle dock, home of the Moorings' crewed charter fleet and Club Mariner small boat activity centre. Treasure Isle Hotel, across the road, is one of Road Town's finer hotels, offering excellent air-conditioned accommodations with telephones. They boast a fresh-water pool with gardenside dining. Village Cay Marina

To your port when entering, Village Cay Marina can accommodate over 100 yachts of up to 150 feet in length. The slips offer metered water and shore power, phone service and cable TV. Shower facilities, laundromat, ice and provisioning are also available. There is also a fresh-water pool, waterfront restaurant and bar.

The Marina Hotel offers air-conditioned rooms and 1- or 2-bedroom condominium rentals, all within short walking distance of the banks, shopping and other conveniences of downtown Road Town.

Near the complex, the Ample Hamper offers custom provisioning services and a fine selection of wine, cheese, pate and various other foods to tempt the palate.

In Columbus Centre you will find outside dining at the Fish Trap seafood restaurant. Also in the Centre are Virgin Island Sailing, Girl Friday, and several shops. Within a few minutes' walk of the marina are several banking institutions including Barclay's, Chase Manhattan and Nova Scotia, and numerous business offices and gift shops.

The Inner Harbour Marina

Inner Harbour marina is nestled alongside Village Cay to the south. Yachts can pay for their stay by the hour, day or month. The services provided include water, electricity, telephone, and cable TV hookups, and convenient walking distance to the shops of Road Town. BVI Bareboats bases its operations at the marina. The Captain's Table, a congenial restaurant, overlooks the harbour and offers excellent food.

Tortola Yacht Services

Located on Wickham's Cay II behind the Moorings, Tortola Yacht Services, owned and operated by Albie Stewart, has become one of the foremost yacht care centres in the Caribbean. The shipyard has both tami lift and marine railway capabilities up to 80 tons, dry stor-age for up to 40 yachts, an awlgrip refinishing

On your starboard 3 hand as you enter Road Harbour is a small bay with a marina that has recently been acquired by a French charter company, Stardust Marine.

The marina , having been left unattended for two years, is currently being renovated and improved. Facilities already in place are docking, electricity, diesel fuel, water, ice and laundry . Shoreside facilities include showers, acom-missary store, boutique, bistro-bar, restaurant and 10 room hotel.

Visiting yachts are welcome to use alongside docking when available or to use the moorings off the marina.

If you are anchoring off the dock, beware of the numerous coral heads in the area that

can cut through nylon anchor line.

There is a landing area inside the breakwater. Do not land your dinghy to the left of the dock, as this area is reserved for the Peter Island Ferry.
