Provisions For The Cruise

Most charter companies in and around the Virgin Islands offer the charter party a choice of provisioning programs or options.

The original concept was designed to cope with the lack of supermarkets. But in recent years, both in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, the selection of goods has increased tremendously. Therefore, your provisioning options are as follows:

A) Allow the charter company to provision for you from a pre-selected plan, to save on sailing time. The main plans are full provisioning, which includes 3 meals a day, or the popular split program, which eliminates some evening meals so you can eat ashore. If you are considering this, ask the charter company for a sample menu.

B) Provision yourself from one of the local markets or delicatessens. This is a good idea if you have specific dietary needs, but it is time-consuming, and when analyzing costs, taxi fares and sailing time should be considered. However, many of the local markets have a surprisingly sophisticated array of products.

C) Have an independent provisioner prepare your provisions in advance and have them delivered to the boat or swing by and pick them up. Provisioning lists are available in advance, allowing you the luxury of choosing your provisioning from home.

Restocking Along the Way

However you provision your vessel, you will probably wish to augment your supply at some point along the cruise. Major items are normally available only in Road Town, Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, Cruz Bay, Charlotte Amalie, Redhook and Christian-sted, St. Croix. Many smaller shops have a surprising selection of provisioning items, including those in Nanny Cay, Cane Garden Bay, at the Bitter End Hotel in North Sound, at Harris's Place in Jost Van Dyke, and at Sapphire Beach Marina and Compass Point in St. Thomas.
