The gap between autopilots and windvane steering systems in this respect could hardly be larger. Because of the large market volume, autopilots are offered via global distribution networks in which direct contact between manufacturer and customer is virtually nonexistent. Only large manufacturers have the resources to set up and maintain a worldwide service network, an important consideration for sailors on a long trip. The major manufacturers visit all the big boat shows.
Windvane steering systems are almost always sold directly. Personal contact between manufacturers and sailors is normal and the customer's confidence is often based on it. Living in the age of Inmarsat, fax, e-mail, UPS, DHL and airfreight there is no corner of the world with which direct communication and supply are impossible. Manufacturer beware - if your products fall short of the mark there is nowhere left to hide!
